We just completed our 10TH free eye camp and we cannot thank you all enough for your support in making this happen!
SMAF continues to conduct our free eye camps in the poverty stricken remote areas of Pakistan. 184 patients received cataract surgeries and hundreds more received additional eye care during our 10th camp!
On October 17th it will be eight years without our Gulae🌹 It would mean the world to us to uncover some photos/videos from the many people who loved her. Please feel free to share a memory as well by following this link:
SMAF is ecstatic to announce the undertaking of a sacred campaign in 2021 – “The Preservation of Native Indigenous Plants and Trees”. Native trees are those that occur naturally in a particular region. Without these plants and the insects that co-evolve with them, local birds cannot survive.
In an effort to preserve these trees in danger of becoming extinct, SMAF has donated 30,000 indigenous plants and trees for the new Government College campus in Lahore, Pakistan. The planting is currently underway! More to share on this soon!
We are so happy to share two new additions to Guale’s Garden!
The first tree is courtesy of Dr. Ayesha Najib. She planted a beautiful Mesquite tree in Scottsdale, Arizona. These trees produce beans and blooms that attract wildlife and they also provide perches and nesting sites for birds!
Our second addition to Gulae’s Garden is from Dr. Shaheen Chowdhry. She planted a tree in Las Vegas, Nevada.
“This is a wonderful pomegranate tree and is one of the best of its kind! It is known for its lush green leaves , big Red Fruit, and juicy red seeds. When my Tree grows and bears Red fruits annually it will remind me more of Sophia. I love working in my garden almost daily, I think of Sophia a lot 💕”
In addition, we are happy to share a heartwarming update regarding our tree in Danville, California courtesy of Farah Rana and her family.
“MashaAllah Gulae’s tree has grown. I hung a bird feeder in it and there is water fountain close to it. Very beautiful small birds come all day there. I hope InshaAllah it’s a sadaqah, shading, feeding, and giving water to these little creatures.”
The 2nd SMAF Free Eye Camp held at the Taluka District Hospital in Ratodero, Sindh, Pakistan was a huge success! Over 1,000 patients arrived after the news was spread of Eye Camp #2. We hope that this improved vision allows each patient to have a more dignified and independent life and encourages them to help their communities.
Over900 patientsreceived eye check ups and treatments ranging from medications to prescription/non-prescription glasses.
An additional 114 patients received cataract surgeries with the latest technology using intraocular lenses.
All those who have received treatment have been scheduled for follow up visits with the ophthalmologists as well.

Phase 2 of our “A Sip of Life” project is well underway with 50 additional water pumps being installed in memory of departed loved ones.
Our Second “Eye Camp” in the remote area of the Sindh Province will occur February 15th-16th.
We’re continuing to renovate and develop Gulae Mahmood Elementary/Middle School.
Once again, SMAF will provide meal packages to families during the month of Ramadan.
Previous Year’s Recap:
Through our “A Sip of Life” project, we were able to install 35 water pumps in remote villages in the South Punjab District of Pakistan, where clean drinking water was not readily available.
We held our first “Eye Camp” where more than 1,900 individuals received free eye checkups and a wide range of ophthalmic care, including medications, supplies and vision screenings with over 500 pairs of glasses gifted. Additionally, over 180 cataract surgeries using intra-ocular (IOL) lenses were successfully performed.
During Ramadan, we surpassed our original target of distributing 200 meal packages by providing over 1,000 packages by the end of the month!
The Foundation gifted more than 100 girls from Munirabad with colorful new outfits, jewelry, henna, and shoes to wear while celebrating the end of Ramadan with their families.
“Gulae’s Garden” has continued to grow with trees in celebrations of life and in memory of lost ones. We have reached four continents so far. This is one of the major initiatives of SMAF and we encourage all our followers to please continue to support this effort.

Special thanks to Dr. Ayesha Najib and Ramona Copelli who planted a tree in a beautiful garden in Pucón, Chile. She planted a Boldo tree (left). “This tree is going extinct in Chile. It is a medicinal tree with its leaves used for digestive purposes. It sits on the border of our yard in southern Chile and will always be tied to Sophia’s honor.” – Ramona
Below is a photo of where the tree has been planted as well as a video of part of Ramona’s fairytale garden. We are so honored that this project and Sophia’s memory will always have a place in South America!
On June 18th, 2019 we planted a Prunus Kanzan (Cherry Tree) in Dollar, United Kingdom. This was a huge honor as we were able to plant the tree the day before the official opening of the garden! The staff was kind enough to show us around this stunning display of Japanese culture and we hope you all can visit it someday too!
“The Japanese Garden at Cowden became the first and only garden of its size and scale to be designed by a woman. It remains a unique and utterly authentic bridge between Scottish and Japanese culture”
